Shellworld Plains
‘I drew this a while ago while re-reading Iain M. Banks’ Matter, and I’d kept it in my map sketchbook until now. It’s a fanart piece, which I drew simply to interpret the Sursamen shellworld featured in Banks’ Culture novel.
I usually see my maps through to completion, or at least get some basic labelling down before I take a break, but this one got left since July and I’ve forgotten what I intended to use for labels and the like. I’ve decided to leave it as it is: a sketchbook entry.’

This was an idea which came to me late at night some days ago, and so in my frustration I decided to spend a couple of hours in Illustrator getting it down. The original idea was for me to represent each of the homes I’ve lived in on a map, with a pie chart of sorts around each to show how long I’d lived there. These segmented rings would then be linked up with arrows to plot a direction of travel.
In the end, I decided that these arrows would be too messy; my ‘migrations’ didn’t fit a path which would keep these segments looking neat, and so I’d have wobbly lines darting all over the place. Instead this is what I arrived at: one means of representing my homes, across a 24-year span from the house I grew up in to the one I rented for my last year at university.
The vector map of England was extracted from this map at Wikimedia Commons.

Brannstadt, Rimwald:
My work-in-progress over the weekend: a hand-drawn map of the vampire capital from this very map of Saren.
This too is a commission, which I intend to scan, and label. This time I’m at liberty to post updates as I go along, so I hope you’ll stay tuned! I’ll wait until I’ve begun labelling before I start pointing out features within the small city.
