Lamia
‘It’s been many a year since I let my infatuations manifest in some artistic way, but so powerful was my reaction to the lamia - who I first learned of in Laurell K. Hamilton’s Circus of the Damned - that I thought I’d give photomanipulation a try. This is the result - two nights of dabbling with liquify filters, blending and lighting. It’s based entirely upon stock gleaned from DeviantART, with credits as follows:’

In’shari Venture Yacht “Bellen”
‘There we are - my completed ship plans. In summary of the “work in progress” posts which preceded this, I’ve submitted the map for a contest at The Cartographers’ Guild. It’s my first time drawing a complete map of a ship, though I’ve drawn a few conceptual outlines as part of my work on DarkConduit.
These plans are intentionally drawn in the raypunk style, mirroring the game project upon which this is based. I’ve also opted to write a novel set in this game world for National Novel-Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), entitled Median: Frontier. Its protagonist is a Tellerian explorer, and this is her vessel: a trimaran venture yacht which isn’t actually named until the end of the book.
The plans were drawn in Adobe Illustrator and edited for presentation in Photoshop.’

This was an idea which came to me late at night some days ago, and so in my frustration I decided to spend a couple of hours in Illustrator getting it down. The original idea was for me to represent each of the homes I’ve lived in on a map, with a pie chart of sorts around each to show how long I’d lived there. These segmented rings would then be linked up with arrows to plot a direction of travel.
In the end, I decided that these arrows would be too messy; my ‘migrations’ didn’t fit a path which would keep these segments looking neat, and so I’d have wobbly lines darting all over the place. Instead this is what I arrived at: one means of representing my homes, across a 24-year span from the house I grew up in to the one I rented for my last year at university.
The vector map of England was extracted from this map at Wikimedia Commons.

Leeds Corn Exchange (Tilt Shift Experiment):
I’ve come across a few tilt-shift photographs lately, and the medium fascinates me, so when I StumbledUpon a tutorial for mocking this effect up in Photoshop, I thought I’d give it a whirl. I’ve used one of the few photographs I’ve taken from a higher vantage point: Leeds Corn Exchange in November, 2006. I reckon I must have been stood outside its quite respectable gothwear shop when I took this photo - its name escapes me.
My guess is that the effect is much more pronounced in street scenes, where the enhanced sheen on cars in particular can really lend to that uncanny feeling, of looking upon a model. Still, I enjoyed the process, and I thought I might as well share my result. Pointers are definitely welcome!
